Accomplishments

Since it’s inauguration, Anambra Women United (AWU) has made numerous donations to underprivileged women and children. Highlighted below are some of AWU recent beneficiaries.


Production Equipment Donation Skills Acquisition – “On December 7th, 2023, Anambra Women United (AWU) successfully implemented a pilot program as part of their Economic Empowerment initiative, making a substantial impact in Anambra State, Nigeria. In this program, 67 disadvantaged women entrepreneurs received specialized training from the Anambra Ministry of Women Affairs. Following their training, AWU stepped in to donate production equipment worth about 16 million Naira. This donation included laptops, industrial ovens, and industrial sewing machines, all aimed at enhancing the business capacities of these women, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the ministry and AWU.”


Microfinance Program – “On November 25, 2023, Anambra Women United, in partnership with the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, hosted a focused one-day business workshop. This workshop was specially designed for disadvantaged women entrepreneurs, who are beneficiaries of AWU’s microfinance program. The primary goal was to educate these disadvantaged women on effective microloan management and to integrate them into the banking system, thereby providing them an opportunity to establish credit and enhance their financial stability.”


St Jude Donation – “On Tuesday, October 10th, 2023, Anambra Women United proudly presented a $5,000 donation to St. Jude, contributing to their noble mission of combating childhood diseases. This achievement was a direct result of the tireless dedication and effort of all those involved. Our donation of $5,000 to St. Jude is a reflection of our shared dedication to positively influencing the lives of children facing serious health challenges.”


School Supply Donation – “On July 29th, 2023, Anambra Women United undertook a commendable initiative by distributing over 400 bags of school supplies to children preparing to return to school. This generous act of support played a vital role in equipping the young students with the necessary materials for their academic journey, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to education and community support.”


Breast Cancer Awareness  – “On July 29th, 2023, Anambra Women United hosted a breast cancer awareness booth at a community event in Jackson Park, Illinois. This significant initiative was specifically aimed at encouraging women to learn how to perform self-examinations for breast cancer detection. During the event, the booth provided valuable educational materials and guidance, attracting hundreds of women who actively participated and benefited from this vital health education outreach.”


Medical Supplies and Equipment Donation – “On December 20th 2017, AWU achieved their dream and reality. It was a huge undertaking but with the support of our donors and the commitment of her members in collaboration with Rotary Club Chicago, Project C.U.R.E and Rotary Club Awka District 9142, we presented 3 hospitals in Anambra State with medical supplies and equipment worth $350,000”.


Fighting to Win – On October 22, 2016, Anambra Women United hosted their 3rd Bi-Annual Breast Cancer Event.


Feed My Starving Children Event – The women of AWU led by Mrs. Ifeoma Onua, President, participated in packaging 148 cartons of food that can feed 88 children for one year. Almost 40 Anambra Women United Volunteers stormed the Feed My Starving Children facility in Aurora, IL for 3 hours. The women worked tirelessly until 148 cartons were packed and ready to go to various countries. The ladies left after blessing the facility, the food, and all the volunteers both here and oversees. Anambra Women United Breast Cancer Awareness Gala – 2014 – On Saturday October 4, 2014, in a packed house, at the internationally acclaimed Tinley Park Convention Center, in Tinley Park, Illinois, the women of AWU held their 2014 Cancer Awareness Gala to raise funds and bring awareness to the immigrant African community about Breast Cancer. The John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook Event – On December 17, 2013, Anambra Women United, Inc visited The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County which is the main public hospital in Chicago.


19th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show – Anambra Women United is proud to team up with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on the 19th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show.


Donation to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, Chicago – On November 24th, 2013, AWU Breast Cancer Committee Members (on behalf of AWU) made a fashionable appearance at St. Jude’s Fashion show as a proud Angel donor sponsoring St. Jude Children Research Hospital, in raising funds towards pediatric cancer eradication.


Donation to American Cancer Society, Chicago – On October 26th, 2013, Anambra Women United in Chicago joined American Cancer Society, Chicago in Soldier Field in making strides against breast cancer by participating in the 3.1 mile walk. The picture shows the president of AWU, Chineze Nkemeh presenting a check (on behalf of AWU) to Steve, an American Cancer Society representative at the end of the walk.


Haiti Earthquake Relief – Anambra Women United (AWU) came to the aid of Haitian people by donating generously to the Clinton- Bush Haiti Fund. In addition to that, AWU donated some money to UNICEF. Our funds helped UNICEF towards deploying essential aid which included safe water, sanitation supplies, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter materials – as quickly as possible to assist with recovery efforts in Haiti.


Monetary Donation to ASA Women and Children Breast Cancer Mission to Anambra State, Nigeria – Anambra State Women and Children committee hosted a breast cancer fundraising event in Maryland to help raise money for the purchase of a mammogram machine. AWU donation to this fundraiser contributed towards the purchase and donation of the mammogram machine to a hospital in Anambra State.


HIV/AIDS Fundraising – Through our HIV/AIDS Awareness fundraising, we were able to donate an X-ray machine and pulse oximeters to an AIDS Clinic in Anambra State, Nigeria run by nuns.

Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago – Per our mission, AWU provides humanitarian services to various segments of the Chicagoland populace and Anambra state of Nigeria. Due to this fact, we of AWU thought it necessary to support the Children’s Memorial Hospital, an institution that caters to children of various ages and different ailments. The picture on the left shows our members – Vicky Anadumaka and Nneka Anigbogu donating a check to the hospital on behalf of AWU.


Donations to Tenderlove Orphanage – The picture shows Hon. Justice Celine Nweke along with friends Ann O. Martins and Ojiefi Ruby Onuko, presenting some items donated by Anambra Women United to the President of Tenderlove Orphanage.
